I grew up on Maira Kalman’s picture books; there is no one whose body of work (for young readers and adults alike) means more to me. Impossible to choose a favorite, but there’s a line in Hey Willy (a book in which a Shahrazad-esque older sister tells whimsical story-poems to her brother) that has been making me shiver with delight since the early 90s.
